Yoga as Peace in Action
Dear Melissa,

September marks the month of the Global Mala Project. Global Mala is an international project designed to join yoga studios and practitioners worldwide in a yoga practice for peace.

I am leading two events for peace on Saturday September 22nd in conjunction with the UN's International Day of Peace.

The first will take place at 10:00-11:00 a.m. at Westminster United Church, 1850 Rossland St. E, on the corner of Garrard & Rossland in Whitby. This event is being hosted by Susan Scherback. You are welcome to join us for a one hour yoga practice that includes guided meditation and gentle stretching as part of a collective global practice uniting every continent in the world in honour of the UN International Day of Peace. Our mission is to raise consciousness and pray for peace by first creating peace in our own mind and bodies and then to project that prayer for peace outwards into our community and our world.

The second will take place at the The Wellness Connection 360 Bayly Street West, Suite #2 in Ajax. This is a two hour yoga practice for peace on Saturday September 22 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. All are welcome.

You may wonder what practicing yoga has to do with world peace. The answer as my dear friend Barbara Joy Bruce reminded me lies in metta meditation.

Metta is a form of loving-kindness meditation in which we send love and peace to ourselves and then gradually extend it outward. By finding peace in our own bodies, minds and souls we are more likely to be able to extend that peace outwards into the world. By beginning with transforming our relationship with ourselves we can then change our relationship with the world.

So, what will this look like in a class? We will begin by coming to our mats for a guided relaxation. With metta meditation we will choose a phrase that will support our intention of cultivating peace in our practice. The phrase can be as simple as, "May I be filled with peace." We will explore ways that the breath can be more peaceful and that the body can have greater ease.

Our asana practice (our practice of yoga postures) will be poses that nurture and promote peace in the body. To open the heart and cultivate compassion for ourselves and others we will practice gentle backbends, sidebends and twists to open the heart area. Opening the heart center generates both a more receptive and giving spirit in our bodies for practicing metta meditation.

Metta meditation starts by creating peace in our own lives, but it carries on by sending that peace outwards. After creating a peaceful environment within ourselves we extend the peaceful wishes to our friends and family, to a neutral person and to a person we find difficult. This loving kindness meditation can ultimately extend out to the whole world and the planet that we inhabit. In this way world peace becomes possible through meditation.

I look forward to practicing yoga for peace with all of you on Saturday September 22nd. If you can't make it on Saturday, many of you know I have set my intention to continue the theme of yoga as peace in action through my yoga classes and yoga retreat this fall.

Namaste,
Melissa
