Step by Step

Beginners-Yoga-Class---Episode-271: In the age of digital media there can be a desire to skip the stage of beginner and go to the end of the path of mastery. In our culture of image rich mastery it can be challenging to occupy the space of beginner and take things step by step. To walk in a gradual way on our path seems counter-intuitive in an environment where images of perfection confront us at every corner.

It is not realistic to compare your beginner yoga practice or everyday life to somebody else’s highlight reel. Remember somebody else’s artistically created social media photos and videos were painstakingly created step by step laborious practices. Do you expect to skip a bunch of steps and become frustrated when you cannot jump to an artistically created endpoint? In our insta-matic culture it is important to remember that practices like yoga are actually practices and take time to master.

Today we will focus on the progressive practice of yoga. We will spend time preparing for your yoga pose, we will create space to experience your pose and we will honour the time spent coming out of the pose. This step by step experience of your yoga practice will honour your experience as a beginner or beginner’s mind.

Props Needed: Yoga Blocks, Meditation Cushion, Chair or Folded Blanket

Yoga Postures/Asanas: Guided Relaxation, Cat Pose or Marjaryasana, Windshield Wiper Legs, Thread the Needle, Lunge Pose or Anjaneyasana (with Twist), Short Stance Warrior Two Pose or Virabhadrasana Two (static and vinyasa), Wide Legged Standing Forward Fold or prasarita padottanasana, Sphynx Pose or Salambha Bhujangasana, Easy Twist or Parivritta Sukhasana, Tortoise Pose or Kurmasana, Savasana or Corpse Pose

If you live in Victoria, British Columbia we are looking for you! Real men and women, beginners, and people who have never tried yoga before. If you are not flexible, unbalanced, nonathletic, out of shape and have a voluptuous body we want you! If you have a medical condition and an injury but have permission from your doctor to engage in exercise, we still want you! We aren’t looking for models, people with perfect bodies, people who have been practicing yoga for years or yoga teachers. We are looking for people who love being outside and would benefit from one on one, slow step-by-step instruction. We are looking for people who are willing to make a difference and want to make a contribution to real people just like yourself all around the world. All you have to do is volunteer to be in an episode of Namaste Yoga. Your lesson will be video taped and offered for the benefit of thousands of people around the world.

Sending you much love from beautiful British Columbia
May you experience the strength of our mountains
May you be as rooted as the trees in our forest
May your joy be as deep as our pacific ocean.
