Today’s question from Sheila:

Books-on-Hindu-Gods-and-Goddesses-with-Melissa-WestThank you for your great work! I know you have shared stories of deities and gods/goddesses – could you give me a list of the ones you read from in class and any others you can recommend? Thank you soo much! Be peace.

Dear Sheila,

This is a tough question because there are so few good resources out there and I search far and wide and pull from many different (often very academic) resources to put together our classes.

I think in many ways our classes on the Hindu Deities and Gods and Goddesses are the best resources themselves!

Namaste Yoga 24-30 is a special series on the Hindu Deities

Namaste Yoga 80-92 is a special series called Yoga Stories which introduces much Hindu Mythology, history and many Hindu Deities.

Namaste Yoga 108-115 is a special series on the Hindu Devi Vishnu

Namaste Yoga 122-128 is a special series on the much loved Hindu Deity Ganesh

Namaste Yoga 143-152 is a special series on the Hindu God of Destruction, Shiva

Namaste Yoga 161-169 is a special series on the Hindu Goddess of Abundance, Lakshmi

and we have just started a brand new series on the Hindu Goddess Durga starting with episode 181 of Namaste Yoga.
That being said, there are a few I would recommend.

Myths of the Asanas by Alanna Kaivalya and Arjuna van Der Kooij

Downward Dogs and Warriors by Zo Newell

Ganesh goes to Lunch by Kamla K. Kapur

and one of my favourite authors, Sally Kempton, just came out with a book on the Hindu Goddesses:

Awakening Shakti: The Transformative Power of the Goddesses of Yoga
