I want to be a yoga teacher. What should I do?

by Melissa West on July 22, 2012

I get asked this question all the time. The most important thing you can do is expose yourself to as many different styles of yoga classes as possible. Find out what style of yoga resonates best with you. Yoga teacher trainings are usually offered at yoga studios. Some yoga teacher trainings are offered at training centers. From there take classes with the teacher that will be teaching the teacher training to find out if you are compatible with that person. You will be spending a lot of time with that teacher and receiving a lot of feedback from that person, so you want to make sure you jive with them. Talk to people who have taken the teacher training program and find out if they were happy with the program. If the students from the program are disgruntled, that is a pretty good reason to look for another program. Find a program that suits you and your life. There are lots of options from 1 month intensives where you can go away for a month to 2 years in your home town where you take classes every other weekend. You need to know what is going to work best for you and your family.

N.B. Since recording this blog post we have created a leadership program for yoga teachers (Mentor with Melissa) and a MasterMind group for graduates of Mentor with Melissa to help them grow and develop their yoga businesses.
