What can I do about my Monkey Mind?

by Melissa West on July 24, 2012

Good Morning Melissa this might be an odd request but I was wondering if you had any tips on focusing on the present moment? I have one of those minds that wanders in the past and in the future lol! I know how to focus but still can only do it for a few seconds then I’m wondering again. I read the book the new earth and learned lot about the present moment and the ego and the pain body. So, I was wondering if you had any tips? Thanks so much, Diane xoox

I have two tips for Diane. In order to reduce the amount of noise going on in your head you have to reduce the amount going in. The first tip I have for Diane comes from Dr. Andrew Weil and that is to go on a media fast. Cut out all media especially the “news.” Turn off your television, news radio and newspapers. This will give your mind a lot less to think about.

My second piece of advice is to anchor your mind to your breath. Even when you anchor your mind to your breath it is easy to wander into the past and start thinking about the future. That is why working with a mantra can give your mind something to hold onto. I highly recommend Thich Nhat Hanh’s mantra, “Breathing in I calm my body, Breathing out I smile.” That is a great mantra to use with breath to anchor your mind in the present moment.
