Yoga with Melissa 149 Shiva Series How Shiva Got his Blue Throat, Yoga to Release Your Neck

by Melissa West on

Yoga with Melissa 149 is a hatha yoga class to release your neck in preparation for shoulderstand. The story of how Shiva got his blue throat and the churning of the ocean of consciousness is such a great story. It reminds us that when we come to the meditation cushion or the yoga mat and we begin to dig deep into our consciousness we will come into contact with some `poison` that we have to clear. This is the descending journey. However, once that poison has been cleared, many gifts and the most beautiful jewels await us, not only that, but the immortality of our everlasting soul which never dies and that is the nectar of immortality. That is the promise of yoga and meditation that you will find the jewel within, your True Self.

In this hatha yoga practice we will release your neck with some neck stretches in honour of Shiva’s blue throat and prepare for shoulder stand and fish pose. We will also practice Mountain pose in honour of Mount Mandara, some cobra in honour of the serpent Vasuki and Tortoise pose in honour of Vishnu.

The war against good and evil had been going on for eons and the demons had a slight advantage on the celestials. Both sides knew that they needed the nectar of immortality or else they would eventually die. The nectar of immortality lay at the bottom of the ocean of consciousness and in order to retrieve it they would have to churn the ocean itself.

Unfortunately the Gods and Demons would have to work together to retrieve the nectar of immortality from the ocean of consciousness. If they drank the nectar of immortality, then they would become immortal to all the worlds.

First they had to find a way to churn the ocean of consciousness. Shiva came forth and said, “Part of my consciousness is anchored in an etheric mountain of such strength that will not shatter from the forces that you put forth. I offer Mount Mandara as a churning stick. Also, my friend Vishnu will give himself as Kurma, the tortoise and on his back the churning can take place so that the entire universe does not tear apart.” Shiva then offered the serpent Vasuki as the churning rod so that they could churn the ocean of consciousness.

Shiva asked everybody to stand back as the churning of the ocean of consciousness began. Vasuki fastened himself to Mount Mandara, Parvati released an infinitesimal minute portion of energy that allowed them to commence their activity. HOlding on to VAsuky the Gods and the Demons began pulling on the serpent which starting the churning of the mountain on the back of the tortoise Vishnu. Mount Mandara began to rotate on its axis.

As the churning continued something completely unexpected happened, Vasuki, got dizzier and dizzier, and became ill. He erupted and poison spewed from his mouth towards the Gods. Without a thought, Shiva caught the poison in his throat where he neutralized it and the poison turned his throat blue.

As the churning continued many great gifts came out of the ocean of consciousness, not only the nectar of immortality, but the moon, jewels, elephants, Brahmas, Rishis, a wish fulfilling cow, and of course Lakshmi the Goddess of abundance.

What are we to take away from this story? The story of the churning of the ocean of consciousness is such a great story.
