Yoga with Melissa 150 Balancing Masculine and Feminine Energy, The Meeting of Shiva and Parvati

by Melissa West on November 2, 2012

This hatha yoga class tells the story of integrating and balancing our divine masculine and feminine energy through the story of Shiva and Parvati. Shiva’s meditation was dead without the energy of Parvati’s shakti. It was through the flow of her shakti that Shiva’s meditation came alive. This is a story of passion and love and the uniting of masculine and feminine energies. For her part, Parvati instantly grasped and assimilated the great spiritual practices that yogis everywhere strove endlessly to achieve.

In this hatha yoga class we will practice dynamic vinyasas in honour of the shakti energy to open up the heart center and celebrate the joining of the masculine and feminine principle. After the story of Shiva and Parvati you will come onto your back for the LUV vinyasa to open up your shoulder, hip joints and backs of your legs. Following that you will come into cat pose for some dynamic vinyasa through cat and downward facing dog. When you come to standing we will focus on some heart openers and then dancer pose. We will come back down to seated for a twist and a forward fold. This hatha yoga class ends with a seated meditation.

Our story starts with Shiva in self-contemplation, completely absorbed in universal consciousness. Shiva sat alone in meditation, unconcerned with the unfolding of the universe, concerned only with his own consciousness and his own awareness. Shiva was completely absorbed in his own inner self through meditation.

Parvati was born to the parents Mena and Daksha and they knew she was a special child. Even as a young girl Parvati would close her eyes and meditate on a male ascetic sitting, covered in ashes with bluish skin and matted hair. Whenever she meditated this man would come into her inner vision. As she grew into a woman she knew she must meet this great Shiva who she heard meditated in the icy mountains of the North.

Parvati appealed to the Hindu deity Kama, who is equivalent to cupid to help her fetch the desire of Shiva. Parvati knew that Kama had the ability to infuse anything with passion and asked Kama to infuse Shiva with passion for her. Kama could see that Shiva and Parvati were meant for each other and quickly agreed to help her. They started out together for Mount Kalaid where Shiva was meditating.

Kama and Parvati arrived at the top of the mountain and could see Shiva’s hut at the top of the hilly plateau. Kama went ahead to awake Shiva from his meditative slumber. Kama moved in behind Shiva at the corner of hit hut. From his hiding spot he sent his bolts of passion and desire towards the meditating Shiva.

After a few moments Shiva began to stir and looked around to see what had disturbed him. “Who dares to disturb me from my meditation?” Shiva howled in an angry voice. Kama was not used to being greeted with anger. Most people enjoyed being struck with love. Kama tried to tell Shiva that he brought him a lovely woman who desired his favour.” This only angered Shiva further.
“You think you can tempt me with carnal desire like some common animal?” Shiva roared with anger.

Shiva opened his third eye and sent a lightning bolt of energy that cut through Kama’s head and reduced it ashes. Parvati jumped out from her hiding place and pleading with Shiva, “No, no, he was only doing what I asked Shiva!”

“Well,” Shiva said nonchalantly, “he has paid the price.” Shiva smeared his body with the ashes that had once been Kama’s head and smeared it all over his body and returned to his meditative seat. Parvati tried to think of something she could do to alter the present tragedy. Shiva, no matter how hard he tried, could not return to his meditative state, distracted by the beautiful Parvati.

“Who are you?” he asked the beautiful young woman”

“I am Parvati. But I am afraid I am going to be called Parvati the destroyer after the fate I caused poor Kama after he did what I asked.” Parvati lamented.

“Didn’t you know that I hate being disturbed?” Shiva asked

“I only knew that since I was a baby, your form has been in my meditations and dreams. I had no idea you had such a temper!” Parvati said with disdain.

“I am not responsible for your ignorance.” Shiva replied.

“But those who are meant for you should be greeted with courtesy not hostility. Though Kama was not meant for you, I am. Therefore you should have treated Kama with respect.” Parvati replied.

Shiva began to shift slightly. He was not used to being spoken to in this way. Here was a very attractive woman speaking to him with complete fearlessness! He was astonished and even attracted to her! Shiva could not stop himself and even found himself smiling! His anger even changed to laughter. Parvati rose and moved towards Shiva, “If I am to be with you, then I must do as you do.” and she settled herself beside him in deep meditation.

Shiva found that his meditation was no longer alone, inert consciousness. Now his mediation was dynamic, filled with energy and motion with Parvati by his side. For her part, Parvati instantly grasped and assimilated the great spiritual practices that yogis everywhere strove endlessly to achieve. (Story taken from Thomas Ashley-Farrand’s Shakti Mantras)

This story shows a beautiful coming together of the divine masculine and feminine energies. Even Shiva’s meditation was dead without the energy of Parvati’s shakti. It was through the flow of her shakti that Shiva’s meditation came alive. This is a story of passion and love and the uniting of masculine and feminine energies. In today’s yoga class we will practice dynamic vinyasas in honour of the shakti energy to open up the heart center and celebrate the joining of the masculine and feminine principle.
